Soul Glitch

Photobook & Art Exhibition series

‘Soul Glitch’ features a series of conceptual photographs with a double exposure treatment exploring identity and authenticity in the face of societal pressures. It captures the internal battle of conflicting emotions, thoughts and feelings we have - our authentic self vs. the version we portray.

Concept statement

We are citizens in a culture overcome by the desire to belong and fit into society, that we live being pressured to follow the path in life that is already set out for us.

We’re told the steps we must follow at a young age to reach “success” that we lose sight of our own dreams and aspirations to accomplish what has been expected of us.

Along the journey, we unconsciously create an alternate version of ourselves that loses the essence of our authentic self. No matter the struggles, trials or hardships we face throughout life, we suppress how we feel and sometimes who we are to assimilate. We put on a strong, confident disguise that mutes all feelings of pain, sadness and guilt, painting a picture that everything in life is fine. We use these masks like armour – to protect ourselves. To help us get through each day. To survive.

But after wearing this mask for too long, we can’t help but feel overpowered by the emotional suffering we put ourselves through to fit in, unleashing a different side of ourselves into the world; a soul glitch.

‘Soul Glitch’ aims to show that it’s ok to let your guard down; to let go of that mask you hide behind - to be vulnerable. This series is a celebration of individuals that have challenged the social norm and have decided to carve their own unique pathways in life.

Let go of the idea that your life is set and embrace the freedom amongst constraints.
